Bill Brooks
drums, percussion, vocals & samplers
My earliest recollection of having drums is when I was around 5 or 6. My 4 year old sister destroyed them though.
She thought they were a den! I played side drum in marching bands for a few years as a young teenager which gave
me a strong sense of timing, the drums essentially being a means of communication, until one day I discovered that
you could actually sit down and play! So, I bought a pretty manky kit from a friend for £20, still a reasonable amount
in 1975, locked myself in the shed and taught myself the basics. Playing with other musicians though, is where I brought
it all together, and from 1976 onwards I played in a number of bands, performing music right across the spectrum:
Country & Western, Heavy Metal; you name it! One of the most successful, if brief, bands was Tor. We were a 3-piece
after Canadian rock band Rush, but had definitely started to develop our own sound. We got airplay on BBC Radio 1s
Friday rock show, courtesy of the late Tommy Vance, and came 2nd in a national Battle of the Bands competition.
RainDance was one of the longest time-served bands-almost 20 years, and with the same line-up! we played the Regent
Theatre and Corn Exchange, had airplay with Mark Goodier at Radio 1, and were the darlings of the local radio station
Town102. We also played support to Suzie Quatro, The Levellers and Doctor & the Medics. A function band ( The Invited, with aforementioned sister ) and a heavy metal band, Wages4Sin, later and I was ready to hang up the
drumsticks and take a break. Cue Dave Osborne, our bassist and head honcho. He basically made me an offer i couldn't refuse.
The Beatles, and more specifically, Wings were part of the soundtrack to my teens.
They seemed always to be in the charts and always at a key moment.
Paul McCartney is an amazingly talented songwriter and musician who set the bar high and I am really enjoying
the challenge of learning and performing his material. I hope you think we do his songs justice.
